VOICE 101: This class is a very important class for those who want to become singers in theatre, a rock band or even your church choir. Basic care of your vocal cords is the most important thing for a long and successful career in music. In this class you will learn proper breathing techniques, good vocal warm ups and singing exercises that will strengthen your voice. You will also have the chance to begin learning basic music theory. Scales, quarter notes, half rest, time signatures and treble clef. If you want to be a singer and you don’t know what those things are you need to take this class. VOICE 101 is a core class and must be completed along with ACTING 101 and DANCE 101 in order to move on to any advanced classes.

Ages 8-18

Teacher: Julie Porter

CYT VOICE 101

Dear Parents of Voice 101 students:

Welcome to Highlands Ranch CYT’s Voice 101. We will be talking a lot about vocal care, and learning warmups, proper singing techniques, and some of the things that are peculiar to singing in an acting role. This class is NOT intended to take the place of private voice lessons, but rather to give the kids some basic knowledge about singing technique and how to care for those cords. Get them started drinking lots of water right away!

Allow me to introduce myself: My name is Julie Porter. I live in Highlands Ranch with my husband Bob and daughter Lilia. I also have two grown daughters, one in grad school in Vermont and the other living in Lakewood. I have been teaching for CYT for 5 years. I teach general music and choir at Denver Christian, and I sing and play bass in the praise band at Littleton Vineyard Church. I have been singing all my life, and play guitar, a little piano, African drums, and a little violin, and I am currently learning to play the bassoon!

We will be singing selections from The Lion King for our showcase, which should be lots of fun.
